Autumn is here, which means it’s time to bust out the apple cider, pumpkin pie and fall planting supplies! Cooler temperatures provide the perfect opportunity to plant a variety of seasonal perennials, bulbs and more before the freezing temperatures of winter arrive. Ensure that your garden looks good in the coming months by getting these beauties in the ground this fall.
Ornamental Cabbage & Kale
Brighten up your fall garden space with a burst of purples, pinks and blues! Waiting until it’s nice and cool outside is important when it comes to planting ornamental cabbage and kale. Plant in moderately moist soil in a sunny location, and make sure the plants stay well watered. When temperatures fall below 50 degrees, their beautiful colors will intensify!
Bloody Dock (Red Veined Sorrel)
These charming, low-maintenance perennials are known for their green leaves with distinctive red and purple veins running through them. Choose a spot with good drainage and partial shade in early fall, and be sure to water the plants regularly. It’s also worth noting that this plant is known for its ability to grow around ponds and in water gardens. While it’s an attractive addition to any landscape, it’s also edible and can be used in a variety of recipes.
Pansies
Pansies are colorful flowers that are resistant to cold and frost. These cool-weather plants are also known for their “faces!” Plant them in moist, well-drained soil in an area with full or partial sun. They should be watered regularly, and be mindful to remove dead and diseased flowers so the plants continue to produce fresh blooms. Colors include orange, white, red, yellow and purple among others.
Golden Oregano
This ornamental, edible herb does well in a windowsill, on a deck or in a pot. It is evergreen so it doesn’t have to come inside. It will take over a pot outside as it lives year-round and gets fuller and fuller. It is known for producing pink and purple flowers in the summer but reverts to light green for the fall months. Water this plant daily for the first few weeks, then you should allow the soil to dry in between watering’s.
Red Rooster Grass
Red Rooster Sedge has a coppery color that goes well with several fall arrangements, including mums. Use it to accent a variety of your favorite autumn plants and give your living space a seasonal makeover. It’s a fabulous addition to fall and winter containers and needs full sun and moist soil with good drainage.
