It’s that time of year again! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming. Celebrate the return of spring by planting your own garden. Spring marks the start of a new growing season and the beauty that blooms with it every year. Before choosing the flowers you want to plant this season, it is important to understand the different climate zones here in Arkansas to determine which flowers grow as perennials and which are considered annuals.
What’s Your Zone?
The climate in Arkansas fluctuates significantly throughout the year. Knowing the climate zone will help you find the flowers, plants, trees and vegetables that will flourish in your garden. Spring is the time when you should plant summer annuals and perennials. A plant sold as an annual will complete its life cycle in one season. These will grow during the warmer months and then die when cold weather hits. These warm-season annuals include marigolds, tomato plants and impatiens, among countless others. Perennials, on the other hand, will die back in the colder months but begin new growth in the spring. In Arkansas, look for perennials like peonies, daylilies and ferns to add to your flower garden.
Time to Plant!
We challenge you to put that green (or, almost green) thumb to the test! Even with healthy flowers, perfect soil and an ideal location, your garden could be ruined if you don’t plant your flowers at the right time. Using the Farmer’s Almanac to find out when the best time to plant flowers in your area can be very helpful. When choosing your plant, find out how much sun it will need and adjust accordingly – most flowers will need six hours of sunlight during the day. As far as soil goes, most flowers do best in garden soil that is loose and well-drained, with a good amount of organic material as part of the soil composition. You will want your garden to be located in a prominent spot that you look at often for two reasons – so that you won’t forget to water your flowers and so you can enjoy their beautiful blooms!
But, we digress, this is Arkansas, and although a beautiful flower garden is an ideal spring project, we realize it can be a daunting task during the hot summer months.
