Women of Horticulture & Botany

Thousands of noteworthy females have worked in botany and horticulture and changed the way we look at nature. These women have all made important contributions to the sciences and have literally, and figuratively, changed the landscape for those who came after them.

Beatrix Potter, who is best remembered for her famous children’s books like The Tale of Peter Rabbit, became a well-respected and highly regarded scientist of mycology after she spent years studying and experimenting with fungi. Caroline Dormon, the preservationist and botanist, helped preserve and designate the Kisatchie National Forest in her home state of Louisiana. American horticulturist and conservationist Judy Zuk was president of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for more than 15 years and devoted her life to promoting botanic gardens as integrated institutions demonstrating the best in horticulture, education, conservation, science and public service.

Women in our own backyard here in Arkansas have made a tremendous impact on local horticulture. The name Janet Carson should be familiar to those interested in local gardening as she is a regular contributor to publications, blogs and television segments about horticulture in Arkansas. Carson currently serves as Extension horticulture specialist at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.
