Grace is our new designer here at Leafscape, which means she gets to create beautiful plantscapes for our amazing clients. She works with new and existing clients to make sure they get exactly what they want – a beautiful living design! We sat down and asked Grace some questions so you all can get to know our newest teammate.
Question: Tell us about where you were raised and what type of education you pursued?
Grace: I was born and raised here in Little Rock and went to Harding University in Searcy for my undergraduate degree. I graduated from Harding two years ago and earned a bachelor’s degree in social work while I was there. I know, you’re probably wondering what that has to do with design! I’ve actually done interior design on the side for years and, while I enjoyed my time in social work, not too long ago I knew I needed a change. I really feel like I went “back to my roots” of what I love – that artistry that comes with plantscaping and creating custom art.
Question: How did you end up here at Leafscape?
Grace: I actually hadn’t heard about biophilic design, but a close friend of mine has been working at Leafscape and actually asked me if I knew anything about it. I answered honestly with a “no,” and it really sparked my interest. I began doing a lot of research and was grateful to hear that this job became available.
Question: What is your role at Leafscape?
Grace: My title is Designer and I basically get to tell people about what we do and build relationships in the community. I get to talk about our capabilities – like green walls, moss walls, living walls, etc. I want to make sure people know we are a resource for them. I’m excited about working to expand our wedding and special event work. I’m really pumped about showcasing some exciting new things this fall.
When I was younger, I designed with my preferences in mind. But I’ve learned so much and have been able to create designs for other people’s spaces that are their style. Designing on their brand is honestly more fun and challenging for me. I get to put myself in their space – and figure out their perspective.
Question: What did your friends and family think about this job transition?
Grace: They were super excited when I made this job transition. Plants are life-giving! Social work is hard, but it’s been a really cool transition into this role. For me, the strength I’ve gained in my time doing social work is something I knew I could take anywhere.
Question: What has it been like joining this team?
Grace: When I first talked to Robin, who owns PLANTation Services, I knew what the culture here would be like. Robin is really one of those really rare people. She’s a woman in business that you really can look up to personally and professionally. I’m so genuinely grateful to be working under her. There’s so much to learn from her! Every interaction is very personable and she’s so others-focused.
Our team here is the same way. The culture here has been the best part of my job so far! Everyone is so positive and they really have your back. Everyone was excited to welcome me and really friendly! The design part has been really fun – to work with a different medium than I’m used to has been a fun challenge.
Question: What do you like to do with your free time?
I love to go hiking! Anywhere in Arkansas is beautiful; I love to be outdoors! I love to paint and I enjoy drawing. I recently got married in October to my husband, Reed, and we just got a new puppy a few weeks ago. She’s a mini Goldendoodle named Rory and she’s so cute!
Question: Why should someone choose Leafscape as their plant provider?
Grace: I think what sets us apart is the quality of the work that we do and the relationships that we build. We really do love what we do! When you’re passionate about something, you give it everything you have. I get to see that around here all the time – that’s so unique for a business! For me, our artistry and design is super important. I know that I really want to understand you, our customer, and your space. What’s your specific design? How can I bring your style in plant form so that it’s life-giving and cohesive in your space? I love getting to understand your goals and meet your needs.
